The evaluation in this class is designed to incorporate several different aspects of learning a new language so that the students have many chances to succeed.
The specific outline is as follows:
-Group Projects (x5 throughout the term) : 40%
-Autobiographical Unit Project Presented on September 30th
-Weather Unit Project Presented on October 30th
-Urban Legends Unit Project Presented on November 30th
-Sports Unit Project Presented on December 18th
-French Culture Unit Presented on January 20th
-Journals: 20%
-Journals are assigned every Monday and students are responsible for presenting their journals the following Monday. Topics will vary from week to week but may include: "What I will be doing in 5 years", "My Dream House", "A Collage of Me", etc. Journals are to include 4-5 sentences and a visual representation of their choice.
-Quizzes (x5 throughout the term) : 20%
-There will be 5 quizzes, they will correspond directly to the information we have learned in our units.
-Participation: 10%
-Students are expected and encouraged to participate in class. When they participate, they are awarded a "jeton", students are expected to collect at least 40 "jetons" throughout the term.
-Final Interview (x2 throughout the term) : 10%
-As communication is a major component of the class, students will participate in two private interviews with me. They will be given some general topics beforehand and will have some time to brainstorm before the interview begins.
All forms of evaluation are designed with this guideline provided by the Department of Education in mind:
-items place the student in naturalistic contexts
-items are based on simulated authentic discourse, where appropriate
-items are presented in situational formats
-items focus on the assessment of overall language proficiency
-items reflect a blend of open-ended and close-ended formats
-items reflect the themes of the course, as emphasized in the instructional process
-items reflect an equal weighting among the language skills
-items are based on pieces of writing chosen to reflect a variety of different styles (Department of Education 2010).
